Building a mass readership

On medium.com!

This week, my first week on medium.com, I have been giving a bit of a blow-by-blow real time commentary on getting started.

I’ve been doing this because I thought you might like to know what it feels like to get up and running on the platform. Especially if, like me, you are completely new to the writing game.

Or maybe you haven’t even started yet? Or maybe you’re one of the friends I’ve never met. One of those folks who never thought about writing but might just need a little nudge to tickle your fancy? Who knows?

I’m a retired guy. Too old to change. Or so they say. So if I can get up and running on this medium thingummy, I’m sure anybody can. So read on.

It’s day 5. I have done an article a day. And so far the statistics pages tell me I have picked up 4 readers. That’s 1 a day so far.

1 new reader a day. Is that good? For a beginner? Well, I think yes it is! Anybody can see that! But then again, maybe no it isn’t. Only an imbecile would be happy at this pathetic performance.

So let’s examine this issue more closely.

Yes, because it’s better than I expected.

I am starting from scratch. No writing background behind me whatsoever. No existing readers eager to devour my output. In fact, no one who has ever heard of me, writing wise.

So, before I started I honestly felt that I might be in for a bit of a long haul.

Of course it’s early days yet. But 1 new reader a day from 4 days of a new article a day sounds quite good to me to start with. Hopefully with plenty more to come.

On the other hand, no.

4 readers is a pathetically low figure. I should be ashamed of myself.

I actually know more than 4 people. Yes! Even me! I have more than 4! Friends, family, neighbours, the postman, the bin men, the local shopkeeper, the men who water the hanging baskets in the high street. I’ve not bothered trying to count them. But I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more than 4 of them.

Clearly therefore, if I’ve only got 4 readers, this means that even some people I know personally are not reading my stuff! What a cheek! I shall have to scrub them from my Christmas list right away.

Come to think of it, maybe I can read my own stuff to boost the figures? Not sure if that’s allowed…

Overall, and on mature reflection (very mature), I think 4 readers in 4 days so far is okay. Mustn’t try to run before I can walk. Steady as she goes.

You see, the thing is, I decided before I started that I was not going to tell anyone anywhere about my new writing endeavour. Not a soul. Because I wanted to see how I get on. Without any of that self promotion stuff.

You know. Just write. Upload it to the medium.com site. And sit back and wait to see what happens.

And now here I am. It’s happening. Right before my very eyes! Cor!

I’m sure there are millions more readers out there for me. They’re probably hiding just round the corner. Ready to jump out at me. And mob me with their enthusiasm and hero worship. I’m sure that’s it.
